OpenAI has launched Astra, its latest AI model, positioning it as a major step forward in computer and browser-based AI capabilities.
The company describes Astra as its most capable model yet, with improvements focused on computer use, software engineering, cybersecurity, reasoning and task automation.
Astra Expands AI Computer Use
A key focus of Astra is its ability to interact with computers and browsers to complete complex tasks. OpenAI says the model is designed to deliver greater speed, accuracy and safety while allowing users to delegate more work to AI systems.
The model is initially available to customers using OpenAI's cybersecurity program, with access expected to expand to paid Pro, Plus, Enterprise and Business users, as well as API customers.
Stronger Coding and Cybersecurity Capabilities
OpenAI is also highlighting Astra's software engineering and cybersecurity performance.
The company says the model performs strongly across tasks such as identifying software vulnerabilities, working with codebases, executing terminal-based tasks and debugging applications.

Safety and Transparency Concerns
Astra's capabilities have also raised questions around AI alignment and model monitoring.
One area of debate involves its use of an approach described as opaque recurrence, which could make certain aspects of the model's reasoning more difficult for researchers to monitor.
OpenAI acknowledged that monitoring increasingly capable AI systems is becoming more challenging. As models become better at completing complex tasks with fewer or no visible reasoning tokens, researchers may have less insight into how certain decisions are reached.
That creates a growing challenge for AI developers: improving model capabilities while maintaining effective oversight.
Does Astra Signal the Arrival of AGI?
The launch has also reignited discussion around artificial general intelligence (AGI).
When asked whether Astra represents AGI, OpenAI president Greg Brockman said the concept is no longer tied to a contractual milestone and is instead viewed more broadly as part of the company's long-term mission.
Brockman suggested that users can decide whether Astra meets their own definition of AGI, while personally indicating that he believes the technology has reached that stage.
A New Phase for AI Development
Astra's launch highlights how AI models are moving beyond text generation toward autonomous computer interaction, software development, cybersecurity and complex workflow automation.
However, its release also underscores the industry's continuing challenge of balancing increasingly powerful AI systems with transparency, safety and effective human oversight.
