Bitcoin is heading into August with a stronger monthly performance than many investors expected, despite a series of macroeconomic and crypto-specific challenges weighing on market sentiment.
The largest cryptocurrency briefly fell below $63,000 on Friday, declining around 3% during the session. However, Bitcoin remains on course to finish July with gains of approximately 7.5%, highlighting its resilience despite growing pressure across global risk assets.
During the month, markets faced increasing expectations of a potential Federal Reserve rate hike, rising Treasury yields, a sharp reversal in the artificial intelligence trade and a major security incident involving Coldcard, a widely recognized Bitcoin hardware wallet.
Despite these developments, Bitcoin has managed to remain above its recent bear-market lows, while leverage across the crypto market has remained relatively subdued.
Bitcoin Shows Resilience as Leverage Falls
One reason behind Bitcoin’s relative strength could be the reduced leverage in crypto markets.
Analysts at Bitfinex noted that crypto entered the latest Federal Reserve meeting with considerably less leverage than many traditional equity markets. A major sell-off in late June had already removed a significant amount of leveraged positions, with Bitcoin briefly falling below $58,000 on July 1.
Since then, average daily liquidations have remained below the typical $400 million-$500 million range recorded earlier in the year.
This suggests that the market has experienced relatively limited forced selling despite renewed macroeconomic uncertainty.
The earlier liquidation wave may have effectively removed much of the excess leverage that could otherwise have intensified another market decline.
Coldcard Security Incident Adds New Risk
Bitcoin is also dealing with the aftermath of a major security incident involving Coldcard that reportedly resulted in at least $38 million worth of Bitcoin being stolen.
While the incident has not triggered a significant immediate reaction in Bitcoin’s price, analysts remain concerned about its potential impact if the stolen assets are eventually moved or sold.
The incident has also renewed discussion around the risks associated with crypto self-custody.
Self-custody remains one of Bitcoin’s fundamental characteristics, but security breaches involving wallets and private keys demonstrate the operational challenges users can face when managing digital assets independently.
August Could Bring More Volatility
The focus now shifts toward U.S. economic data and Federal Reserve policy.
Markets remain divided over whether the central bank could cut rates, maintain current policy or potentially consider another rate increase. This uncertainty could create additional volatility across high-risk assets such as Bitcoin.
The upcoming U.S. jobs report is expected to become one of the most important macroeconomic catalysts for cryptocurrency markets.
A stronger-than-expected labor market could reinforce concerns about higher interest rates, while weaker employment data could increase expectations for monetary easing.
Bitcoin ETF Flows Become a Key Indicator
Institutional demand through spot Bitcoin ETFs is another factor traders are closely monitoring.
Analysts suggest that a sustained return of positive ETF inflows could provide Bitcoin with an important source of buying pressure.
However, if ETF demand remains weak while real yields and the U.S. dollar continue moving higher, Bitcoin could struggle to establish a sustained breakout.
The market's next major direction may therefore depend less on liquidation activity and more on whether institutional investors return aggressively to the spot market.
What Could Happen to Bitcoin in August?
Analysts increasingly expect August to be a period of consolidation and choppy trading rather than a straightforward bullish move.
Bitcoin could remain range-bound unless one of two major catalysts emerges: a meaningful decline in real yields or a consistent improvement in spot Bitcoin ETF inflows.
The broader market may also remain sensitive to Federal Reserve policy, employment data, Treasury yields and developments surrounding the stolen Bitcoin from the Coldcard incident.
For now, Bitcoin's ability to hold its July gains despite multiple headwinds demonstrates underlying market resilience. However, traders may need to prepare for heightened volatility as macroeconomic signals and institutional flows determine the cryptocurrency's next major trend.
